This follows a textbook overnight pattern: demand troughed near 4,676 MW around 02:45-03:30 AEST with prices pinned at $0-2/MWh, before the morning ramp lifted demand over 4,700 MW in three hours, dragging price from single digits to a peak of $136.73/MWh at 07:30 AEST as demand crossed 8,700 MW. Price sensitivity to demand is pronounced above the 8,000 MW mark — each 100-150 MW step through the 07:00-08:00 AEST window added $10-20/MWh, consistent with tightening supply margins as black coal (currently 4,993 MW) and gas peakers get progressively dispatched up the stack.
The demand trajectory today is a standard two-peak shape. Morning demand peaked near 9,296 MW around 08:35 AEST, holding prices in the $105-119/MWh band through mid-morning before easing back as demand fell toward 7,500-7,900 MW into early afternoon, with prices correspondingly softening to the $65-90/MWh range. Demand is now rebuilding into the evening peak, currently at 8,385 MW and rising, with the 5-minute trend showing consistent 100-150 MW increments per interval — a pattern that historically pushes NSW into the $70-90/MWh band as the evening ramp continues toward typical 18:00-19:00 AEST highs.
AEMO's forecast curve confirms this: spot price is projected to ease to $63.58/MWh by 21:30 AEST as demand tapers post-peak, then collapse through negative territory (-$3.20/MWh) overnight from 23:00 AEST through to 05:00 AEST tomorrow as minimum demand conditions return. The forecast then shows a sharp reversal, with prices climbing back to $93.77/MWh by 08:00 AEST tomorrow — mirroring today's pattern. No demand-side constraints or intervention notices are currently active for NSW; the only relevant network item is the completed Sydney North-Kemps Creek 330kV line return to service, which removes a transfer limitation that had been in place. Traders should note the extreme demand-price elasticity around the 8,000-9,000 MW band — this is where NSW's marginal unit cost curve steepens most sharply today.
